But here is a brief overview of some common cable types and their use cases.
There are two kinds of twisted-pair cables:
STP uses a metal shield and protects wires from radial and magnetic interference. It is heavier and more expensive but reduces crosstalk. STP is used in factories, airports, and medical centers. It is also used for outdoor surveillance cameras.
UTP is less expensive, easier to install, and does not require a ground wire on each end. UTP cables are used in the majority of homes and offices. They are a good option if there is no crosstalk or interference problems. UTP requires less maintenance than STP. UTP cables are most commonly used for computer networks and telephones.
For safety reasons, we only install Plenum cable regardless of what building codes may allow. This is not optional.
Coaxial cable can carry high-frequency electrical signals with little signal loss. We can use coaxial cables for:
Fiber optic cable is very different from electric cables. Fiber cables use light to transmit data over long distances. They are immune from common sources of interference like EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), RFI (Radio Frequency Interference) and crosstalk, which occurs when the signal from one wire interferes with the signal on another wire within the same cable bundle. They also are not impacted by signal degradation over long distances due to resistance that occurs in traditional copper cables.
Different grades of fiber optic cables are used for long-distance telecom or high-speed connections between campuses or buildings.
